Puerto Rico has been a territorial colony of the United States for more than a century. That political status is unequal, undemocratic and simply unacceptable. America needs to to change that! U.S. citizens living in Puerto Rico want and deserve equal rights and responsibilities to those of all other U.S. citizens in the states. That is only possible through statehood for Puerto Rico. You can help!
Petition Text:
Puerto Rico has been a territorial colony of the United States over 120 years. As an "unincorporated territory", the U.S. citizens of Puerto Rico are denied the right to vote for President, have no representation in the Senate and only one member in the House that can't vote on the floor. Making it worse Congress can discriminate against them in federal laws and does so often. This is unacceptable because they serve in the U.S. military, pay most U.S. taxes, and have been a part of the fabric of American society for over a century.
On November 3, 2020, an absolute majority of voters in Puerto Rico chose to be immediately admitted into the Union as a state. This was the third time in ten years where voters in Puerto Rico rejected the current territory status and favored statehood among the non-territory options. Now there is a clear and unquestionable mandate for statehood.
The U.S. citizens of Puerto Rico have decided; now Congress must act. It’s time to end American colonialism in Puerto Rico for once and for all. We urge Congress to respect the expressed will of our fellow American citizens in Puerto Rico by supporting and passing legislation to offer Puerto Rico admission as a state of the Union this year.
